SAFE - EDUCATIONAL - FUN

I have been teaching youngsters to rock climb for the past 25 years and before that both my parents (Terry & Julie) taught rock climbing in this area.  I believe that rock climbing can provide an important part of a schools curriculum. As the acknowledged experts, and with a heritage stretching back 60 years we know a thing or two about climbing. We specialize in in teaching climbing, we do it well. Our philosophy is to make climbing fun within a safe framework. Its not a sterile activity it has many facets. It encompasses group work, personal technical skills, communication skills, relationships, and an appreciation of the great outdoors. We understand that everyone has different talents, and by starting our sessions with low level fast moving Bouldering (short climbs close to the ground, squeezes etc) we get the whole group used to moving on rock and involved right from the start. We choose problems suited to individuals as well as the group as a whole.

All our instructors, as well as being highly qualified, have a deep abiding love of their sport as well as the environment. Many are ex-pupils of ours (often to the surprise of their teachers), which shows we must have been doing something right over the years.

The structure of our courses varies as much as group ability does. We don't believe in forcing students to keep up with a schedule that is beyond them, or indeed holding students back when they show talent. We admit to 'playing it by ear' We place special emphasis on starting all sessions by teaching the basics, moving on rock, correct use of feet & hands, friction etc. From here we move on to the basics of good rope work and safety. It is very important to us that each and every student leaves us having learnt something rather than just having had a quick taster.

SOFT ROCK is the only company in the area that teaches rock climbing full time, because of this we are very good at what we do. We are committed to 'teaching' people to climb rather than just giving a quick taste, and have probably the best record of students who go on to become climbers after receiving tuition from us. Add to this the fact that SOFT ROCK manages, maintains and wardens Harrison's Rocks and we use it as our main teaching venue, we have a knowledge of the rocks and local area second to none.

Schools choosing to take climbing tuition from us can be assured of the very best standards of tuition and safety. We are fully insured, all instructors are fully qualified and hold current first aid certificates. Soft Rock is registered with the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority as licensed to provide specified activities under the following headings
Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Hill Walking & Mountaineering.
License details can be confirmed by calling the licensing authority. Tel 01222 755715.

We can offer one off climbing sessions, half, full day or even after school, this could be for an end of term treat or combined with other studies in the area (Harrison's can be used for field studies by arrangement only). We can also provide a series of regular sessions with students getting the opportunity to work towards our own unique awards, again at times to suit. All students can be catered for from people with special needs through more mainstream pupils to young people displaying challenging behaviors, we can help the shy and nervous reach their 'Everest' and the more confident to find their limits.
